The U.S. blacklisting of Tornado Cash, the Netherlands’ arrest of a software developer for writing code, and EU lawmakers’ attempts to restrict user-controlled wallets and privacy coins all point to the same fundamental tension. Law enforcement, financial regulators and the taxman want to make even the smallest crypto transactions legible, but users want privacy. What is the appropriate balance?
