5 Women Shaping Crypto and Web3 at Consensus 2023

Bringing greater diversity to crypto and Web3 by amplifying different voices in the industry.

Consensus Blog
Web3 is a world where anything is possible – where a more equitable financial system is being created, where ownership is being reimagined and where tokenization is used for profound community building.

Yet, despite Web3’s promise of fairness of inclusivity, the industry as a whole lacks diversity. If crypto and Web3 are to truly transform important aspects of life and business, it will need the collaboration of many diverse perspectives to continue on that path. The Consensus team is committed to bringing greater diversity to crypto and Web3 by amplifying different voices in the industry.

Here is a look at a few of the most influential and innovative women shaping crypto and Web3 today you will hear from at Consensus 2023.

PitchFest’s 2022 winners included a social network for the metaverse called Mona; Merkle Science, a risk management platform for crypto-native businesses; and Deeper Network, a blockchain-based cybersecurity company. It was Givepact, a crypto fundraising platform for nonprofits that funds a community DAO for social good, that took the grand prize.

1. Amanda Cassatt, CEO, Serotonin

Amanda is a notable Web3 builder and seasoned marketer who has helped bring leading blockchain companies to market and advised major brands on how to adopt Web3 technologies. Most notably in her career, she is known for bringing Ethereum to market during her time as the CMO of Consensys from 2016 to 2019.

Today, as the founder and CEO of Serotonin, a Web3 marketing agency and product studio, Amanda helps brands launch Web3 products. Amanda is also the co-founder and president of Mojito, a Web3 commerce suite that helps brands launch various non-fungible token (NFT) projects.
In addition to leading two Web3 companies, Amanda is the author of the book “Web3 Marketing: A Handbook for the Next Internet Revolution” designed to help professionals explore all that Web3 offers.

Amanda met up with CoinDesk at Art Basel in Miami in December to talk about what she is excited about in crypto and Web3 for 2023. The list includes using Web3 tools to create incentive alignment links between the physical and digital worlds, decentralized finance (DeFi) innovation with zero-knowledge proofs, the growth of layer 2s to help make Ethereum limitlessly scalable and the tokenization of more real-world assets.

Amanda will take the stage at Consensus to share some of her experience as a marketer and insight into the future of Web3.

2. Chelsea Manning, security consultant, Nym Technologies

Chelsea Manning is a technologist, network security expert, analyst and consultant best known for her role as a whistleblower in one of the largest document leaks in military history. Manning worked as an intelligence analyst for the U.S. Department of Defense from which she publicly disclosed half a million classified documents revealing human rights abuses and corruption connected to the U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Currently, Chelsea is a security consultant at Nym Technologies, a blockchain startup working to protect internet privacy. She recently sat down with CoinDesk TV to discuss how the fall of FTX opens the door to a wider discussion about privacy and transparency.

“There is a chance now, given this discussion, to innovate in a way to ensure that you know where your assets are,” Manning told CoinDesk.

Manning will join Consensus 2023 to discuss the current state of online privacy and share her outlook for the crypto industry.

3. Jenny Johnson, president and CEO, Franklin Templeton

Jenny Johnson has helped transform Franklin Templeton into one of the world’s most respected asset management firms in her three decades at the company. She transitioned into her role as CEO in February 2020.

Jenny was listed as one of the most powerful women in finance by American Banker, where she is quoted saying that Franklin Templeton has become one of the largest managers of alternative investments.

Jenny will join Consensus 2023 to explore the future of institutional investing in digital assets and blockchain technology.

4. Caitlin Long, CEO, Custodia Bank

Caitlin is a 22-year Wall Street veteran who has been involved with bitcoin for over a decade. She is the founder and CEO of Custodia Bank, a depository institution designed to solve the settlement risk inherent in integrating digital assets with the traditional financial system.

In 2021, Long’s company Custodia Bank (formerly known as Avanti), applied to become a Federal Reserve Member Bank. In January, after 18 months of waiting and a lawsuit for allegedly unlawfully delaying a decision, the Federal Reserve Board denied Custodia Bank’s application for membership. The central bank claimed the crypto-focused institution’s “novel business model and proposed focus on crypto-assets presented significant safety and soundness risks.”

Caitlin was a speaker at Consensus 2022 where she discussed crypto regulation and who should be allowed to issue digital dollars. In 2023 she will return to Consensus with fresh insight on regulatory frameworks based on her experience seeking status from the Federal Reserve.

5. Eva Beylin, director, Graph Foundation

As the Director of the Graph Foundation, Eva is helping to build “the Google of Web3’ by building out infrastructure to make data open source and APIs more accessible with the Graph Protocol.

However, it’s Eva’s role as an investor with eGirl Capital that helped her land a spot on CoinDesk’s 2022 Most Influential list. Eva is known for being one of the few doxxed members of the largely pseudonymous group. eGirl’s thesis is focused on investing in crypto’s core infrastructure such as layer 2 blockchain systems.

Eva started her career in crypto with OmiseGO, the team behind what is sometimes called Ethereum’s first scaling system, the OMG Network, and has also worked with the rollup-friendly Plasma Group.
